You will focus on the way technical aspects of the moving image medium create meaning for an audience, focussing on the creation of representations of specific social types, groups, events or places within the extract. You do not need to study the history of TV Drama.
The unseen moving image extract will be four to five minutes long and will be taken from a contemporary one-off or series or serial drama programme screened in the UK.
To prepare for the exam you will use a full range of examples from TV Drama extracts to demonstrate textual analysis of all 4 technical areas of moving image language and conventions in relation to the unseen extract.
- camera
- editing
- sound
- mise-en- scene
You should be prepared to discuss how these technical elements create specific representations of individuals, groups, events or places and help to articulate specific messages and values that have social significance. Particular areas of representation that may be chosen are:
· Gender (June 2009, June 2010, Jan 2011 exams)
· Age (Jan 2009, Jan 2013 exams)
· Ethnicity (Jan 2010 exam)
· Sexuality (Jan 2012 exam)
· Class and status (June 2011 exam)
· Physical ability/disability
· Regional identity
