Representation of Sexuality - Torchwood (series 2, episode 1)

Some drama texts challenge assumptions and stereotypes about sexuality, creating more complex characters. Torchwood is a playful example of this – a sci-fi drama where sexuality is fluid instead of fixed, and characters cannot be easily categorised.

This clip shows Captain Jack (left) meeting Captain John (right) – someone who is dangerous and mysterious. Jack appears to recognise John from the past, but we don’t know why.

 1. How does this clip represent masculinity in a ‘macho’ or tough way?

2. How does this develop the stereotypical representation of homosexual masculinity?

3. The confrontation borrows a lot of its style from Westerns. How does this impact on the representation of the two male characters?
